When performances were prohibited at Chester in 1596 the city fixed the scale of 'gratuity' at 20s. for the Queen's players and 6s. 8d. for noblemen's players (Morris, 333). The Queen's men were 'much discontented' with 6s. at Dunwich in 1596-7 (Hist. MSS., Various Collections, vii. 82).
