It is not true, of course, that there is an absolute “break” in the upward processes of life. Even in the lower forms of life there are hints of higher possibilities. There is an elemental struggle for the life of others which has in it the potentiality of love and sacrifice. But there is no “sign” on the lower levels—before self-consciousness dawned—of any capacity for an ideal, or of any power to develop by the forecast and vision of the goal.
