Note 183 — Front matter

Reading edition

Shaffner: The War in America, p. 256. (Ingraham): The Southwest, Vol. II., p. 237. It was rather hard to determine whether Missouri should be classed with selling or buying States. It is likely she did some of both as did some others. But practically all her increase after 1830 at least (aside from natural increase) seemed to be due to immigration from Kentucky and Virginia, though her increase was very large, we think she would rank as a selling State anyhow after 1830.
