Note 398 — Chapter VIII · PROBLEMS OF THE ARABIAN CULTURE (B) THE MAGIAN SOUL
Charles Francis Atkinson translation
The soul-stones on Jewish, Sabæan, and Islamic tombs are also called nephesh. They are unmistakable symbols of the “upward.” With them belong the huge storeyed stelæ of Axum which belong to the first to third centuries of our era—i.e., the great period of the early Magian religions. The giant stele, long overthrown, is the largest monolith known to art-history, larger than any Egyptian obelisk (German Axum Expedition report, Vol. II, pp. 28, et seq.).
