MS. 'subtle.' D. [Substantial is here = partaking of the substance or essence, or, as we say, properties peculiar to tobacco—a fume holding in it the virtues or substance of the tobacco. The MS. 'subtle' may be regarded as an Author's variant, especially as it is also found in 'Tobacco' among the hitherto unpublished poems, onward. G.]
