The sobriquet of Gentleman Harry was also enjoyed by Henry Simms, a highwayman who frequented the Lewisham and Blackheath roads. On one occasion, when travelling into Northamptonshire on a rather fresh horse, a gentleman who was in a post-chaise remarked to him, “Don’t ride so hard, sir, or you’ll soon ride away all your estate.” “Indeed I shall not,” replied Simms, “for it lies in several counties,” and dismounting, he challenged the gentleman to stand, and robbed him of a hundred and two guineas.
