Note 88 — Chapter V · IN THE PRESS-YARD.
Reading edition
This cobbler of Highgate was a zealous Jacobite, who turned out in his best suit of clothes on King James’s birthday. For this he was prosecuted, and sentenced to be whipped up and down Highgate Hill, with a year’s imprisonment in Newgate. He lived on the fat of the land during his incarceration, had quarters in the press-yard, and “lay in lodgings at ten or twelve shilling a week.”
