“Thebes and Luxor.” Thebes was a celebrated Egyptian city, formerly the capital of Upper Egypt. The large and costly palaces of the Luxor quarter were founded by Amenophis III., and from here was taken the obelisk which stands in Place de la Concorde in Paris.
