Note 26 — II THE CELTS

Reading edition

Gougaud, Chrétientés, p. 22. The derivation of the word Druid is uncertain. There appears to be no doubt that the Druids practised a form of divination founded not on the flight but on the song of birds, that of the wren in particular. Dren is Irish for wren. From this some have inferred that Druid is derived from dren drui-én. There is another Irish word drúi (genitive druad) which meant a magician. Anwyl, Celtic Religion, p. 55.
