Note 47 — THE CAMBRIAN DIRECTORY.
Reading edition
“The Castle (says an eminent Author) is said to have been built by Gilbert Earl of Clare, who lived in the reign of King Stephen; and Camden reports, that Richard Earl of Clare made Richard Fitz-Tankred Governor thereof. It was one of those in the hands of the Flemings, when they first came into Dyvet, or Pembrokeshire.”
