Note 770 — Chapter XI · THE SWORD IN ANCIENT GREECE: HOMER; HESIOD AND HERODOTUS: MYCENÆ.
Reading edition
Sanskritists hold it to have been originally ἄσορ, and to derive from असि (asi), a Sword; whence आसिक (ásik), a swordsman (Fick, Wörterbuch der indogermanischen Grundsprache). It is probably connected with ἀείρω, because ‘carried’ on the shoulder by the bauldric.
