It is impossible now to determine the date at which they became acquainted with the metal. The earliest reference to the subject is in an account of a visit to the Andamans in 1771, where it is shown that the natives were at that time aware of the value of iron10. Until the middle of the nineteenth century the only supply of the metal was from wrecks, of which there have always been a fair number.
