49 7 banlieue: distinguish banlieue, 'suburbs' in the sense now usual, the district of country surrounding a city and full of dependent villages, from faubourgs, 'suburbs' in the older sense, forming a continuous mass of houses with the main city, and un village (or une ville) de (la) banlieue from un faubourg.
