Reading edition

The earliest example of the artist as Headsman that I have come across is a very rare portrait of Queen Elizabeth, full length, seated on a throne, dressed in a robe of state, holding globe and sceptre, engraved about 1590. The Queen’s figure was subsequently burnished out, and that of James I. substituted. This, unfortunately, I do not possess.
