Note 114 — PART I The Graces

Reading edition

Wentworth has been generally blamed for this sentence, which was one of the principal matters urged against him at his trial; but, though it is evident from several passages in his Letters that he regarded it with approval and was ready to turn it to the King’s advantage, the case had actually been pending for some years before he came to Ireland. See the correspondence between Charles I and the Lords Justices in 1631. (Concise View of the Irish Society. Appendix, pp. 185-188.)
