Note 12 — Chapter V

Reading edition

"German Philosophy and Politics" is sympathetically reviewed by Professor Santayana in the Journal of Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Methods for November 25, 1915. The same Journal reprints (vol. XII, p. 584) a criticism appearing in The New Republic (vol. IV, p. 234) by Professor Hocking of Harvard, who thinks that the fault of the Germans is being too pragmatic. Professor Dewey's reply is published with it. See also Dewey's admirable analysis of the national psychology of Germany, France, and England in his article "On Understanding the Mind of Germany", Atlantic, vol. 117, p. 251.
