The narrator has lost his count: it is the fifth night, not the third. See pars. 31, 36, 39, 40, 42, with the events of par. 44 seq. for the sixth night. It should be said in his behalf that owing to other duties, I was able to work with him only intermittently, and that it was now several days since he had begun his narration to me.
