Note 55 — Chapter IV · WHO IS ATTACKED IN THE MEMORANDUM?

Reading edition

The Fulbright memorandum quoted a statement of Dr. Benson concerning the John Birch Society. It is important, however, to realize that this statement was made at a time when Dr. Benson was not aware of the radical positions which Mr. Robert Welch had taken on some matters. These radical positions Dr. Benson repudiates. Furthermore, his commendation was of their stated long-range purpose “to work for less government, more responsibility and a better world,” and their purpose to inform citizens concerning communism. Is Senator Fulbright against these aims?
