On this occasion (August, 1662) the provocation came from the French side, but Louis XIV loudly demanded reparation for the insults offered to his ambassador by the Pope’s Corsican guards. By the treaty of Pisa (February, 1664) he obtained it in a form which was thoroughly humiliating to Alexander VII.
