The syllables, ut, re, mi, fa, so, la, are said, says Dr. Cranstoun, “to have been first used in the teaching of singing by Guido of Arezzo in the eleventh century. Le Maire, a French musician of the seventeenth century, added si for the seventh of the scale.”
