Note 861 — Chapter IX · UNLUCKY DAYS

Reading edition

See “La recommandation du vendredi,” Mélusine, 1888-1889, iv, 104, 133 sqq., 205 sq. However, the Friday superstition may ante-date Christianity. In Macedonia it is believed that ablutions on Friday are dangerous, especially for women in childbed (Abbott, op. cit., p. 190). The Brahmans of India share the Friday superstition, saying that “on this day no business must be commenced” (Buchanan, in Asiatick Researches, vi, 172). Among the Parsis Tuesday and Friday are inauspicious days, generally avoided for betrothals, marriages, and other happy occasions. Many persons will not begin an important work or start on a distant journey on these days (J. J. Modi, “Omens among the Parsees,” Journal of the Anthropological Society of Bombay, i, 294). All over Burma Friday is unlucky. “Don’t go on Friday” is a current saying (L. Vossion, “Nat-worship among the Burmese,” Journal of American Folk-lore, 1892, iv, 112). For Russian superstitions relating to Friday see above, p. 222 n.²
