Note 790 — Chapter VIII · THE HEBREW SABBATH
Reading edition
This pregnant suggestion was first made by H. Zimmern in his comments on the discovery by T. G. Pinches (Zeitschrift der deutschen morgenländischen Gesellschaft, 1904, lvii, 202 and n.¹). The hypothesis of the original identity of Sabbath and full-moon day was subsequently elaborated by J. Meinhold (Sabbat und Woche im Alten Testament, Göttingen, 1905), whose main conclusions have been accepted by K. Marti (Religion of the Old Testament, London, 1907, pp. 150 sq.) and T. K. Cheyne (Traditions and Beliefs of Ancient Israel, London, 1907, p. 69). See also E. Mahler, “Der Sabbat,” Zeitschrift der deutschen morgenländischen Gesellschaft, 1908, lxii, 40, 46 sq.; M. Jastrow, Hebrew and Baylonian Traditions, New York, 1914, pp. 154 sqq., 185.
