Note 731 — Chapter VII · THE BABYLONIAN “EVIL DAYS” AND THE SHABATTUM

Reading edition

H. Zimmern, in Schrader, Keilinschriften,³ p. 593. In one cuneiform list (Rawlinson, op. cit., v, pl. 28, l. e-f) the verb shabâtu is equated with gamâru, which is thought to mean “be complete,” “be full,” “cease,” though in some other syllabaries it apparently has the sense of “pacify.” In the light of the meaning now assigned to shabattum both translations appear to be intelligible and harmonious.
