Note 534 — Chapter VI · LUNAR CALENDARS AND THE WEEK
Reading edition
The thirteenth month is referred to in the Rig-Veda (i, 25, 8; transl. H. Grassmann, ii, 25) as the “later-born month”; compare Atharva-Veda, v, 6, 4, xiii, 3, 8 (transl. W. D. Whitney, pp. 230, 729). This intercalary month bears a distinctly unfavourable character, being regarded as unfit for any religious undertaking (Haug, Aitareya Brahmanam, ii, 26). Among the Loango negroes the thirteenth month, inserted every three years, is likewise regarded as an evil time (E. Pechuël-Loesche, op. cit., pp. 138 sq.).
