Note 675 — Chapter VI · LUNAR CALENDARS AND THE WEEK

Reading edition

Historia Romana, xxxvii, 18 sq. There is also extant a still earlier explanation of the planetary sequence by Vettius Valens, an astrologer of the age of the Antonines. The one provided by Plutarch, in the seventh chapter of the fourth book of his Symposiacs, has been lost. Dio Cassius attributes the origin of the planetary week to the Egyptians; Lydus, a Byzantine antiquarian of the fifth century A.D., hesitates between the Egyptians and the Babylonians (De mensibus, ii, 31).
