Note 644 — Chapter VI · LUNAR CALENDARS AND THE WEEK

Reading edition

E. Metzger, “Über die Zeitrechnung der Javanen”, Deutsche Rundschau für Geographie und Statistik, 1887, ix, 311; P. J. Veth, Java,², Haarlem, 1907, iv, 297 sq. A recent observer points out that, although the life of a Javanese village is never intensely laborious, it is, in a sense, a life of continuous labour, “for the Javanese does not feel compelled to abstain from labour entirely upon any day of the week—not even on a Friday—to satisfy his religious beliefs. He works as long as he needs to work; but only too often only just so long. His village holidays are numerous” (A. Cabaton, Java, Sumatra, and the Other Islands of the Dutch East Indies, London and Leipzig, 1911, pp. 125 sq.).
