Note 626 — Chapter VI · LUNAR CALENDARS AND THE WEEK

Reading edition

J. F. Fleet, “The Use of the Planetary Names of the Days of the Week in India,” Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1912, n.s., xliv, 1039-1046. For lists of the more common planetary names of the weekdays, as now found in India, see Sewell and Dikshit, The Indian Calendar, London, 1896, p. 2. The celebrated astronomical work in Sanskrit, known as the Sûrya-Siddhânta, contains two references to the planetary week (i, 51-52, xii, 78-79; transl. Burgess-Whitney, in Journal of the American Oriental Society, 1860, v, 175-178, 396), and in the Hitōpadēśa (ed. Johnson, p. 16, l. 411) there is an interesting passage which, as A. W. von Schlegel was the first to point out (Indische Bibliothek, 1827, ii, 178), refers to Sunday as a sacred day.
