Reading edition
Omnes judices urbanæque plebes et cunctarum artium officia venerabili die Solis quiescant (Codex Justinianus, iii, 12, 3). The prohibition of holding court on Sunday was relaxed by Constantine in the same year so far as to permit such legal proceedings as the emancipation and manumission of slaves to take place at this time (Codex Theodosianus, ii, 8, 1). Eusebius (Vita Constantini, iv, 18-20) tells us that the emperor forbade all military exercises on Sunday.
