Reading edition

Macrobius, op. cit., i, 16, 30; Pliny, Historia naturalis, xviii, 3. I accept the view that the lex Hortensia converted the nundinæ into dies fasti non comitiales, that is, forbade comitial meetings on these dates, though allowing judicial business to be done thereon. For this explanation see G. W. Botsford, The Roman Assemblies, New York, 1909, pp. 139, 315, 471; Marquardt-Wissowa, Römische Staatsverwaltung, Leipzig, 1885, iii,² 290. It has been maintained that toward the end of the republican period the prohibition referred to was no longer observed (P. Groebe, in Drumann-Groebe, Geschichte Roms,² Berlin, 1899-1906, iii, 779).
