Note 241 — Chapter III · HOLY DAYS

Reading edition

See G. Wissowa, Religion und Kultus der Römer, Munich, 1902, pp. 365-381; idem, in Pauly-Wissowa’s Real-Encyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft, vi, coll. 2211-2213; A. S. Wilkins, in Smith, Wayte, and Marindin’s Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities,³ ii, 836-838; and especially C. Jullian, in Daremberg and Saglio’s Dictionnaire des antiquités grecques et romaines, iv, 1042-1066. The plural form feriæ indicates that the festival day recurs periodically; compare the similar usage as respects nundinæ (below, p. 120). Feriæ seems to have been first written fesiæ, whence the word festus. On the derivation of feriæ see A. Walde, Lateinisches etymologisches Wörterbuch,² Heidelberg, 1910, pp. 270 sq.
