Reading edition

Ibid., pp. 50 sqq.; Dibble, op. cit., 25 sq.; Malo, op. cit., p. 56. The latter authority, a native writer intimately versed in Hawaiian antiquities, declares that the seasons of taboo were not observed during the four makahiki months of the year, when the regular religious services were suspended for games and ceremonies in honour of the god Lono. The same point is made by Judge Fornander (op. cit., i, 123 n.²), whose information was derived from the Hon. S. M. Kamakau, an intelligent Hawaiian, born and brought up under the heathen régime. On these Hawaiian Sabbaths see below, pp. 88, 188, 233, 258, 303.
