Representative English Comedies, v. 1. From the beginnings to Shakespeare

Note 478 — ROISTER DOISTER BY NICHOLAS UDALL

Reading edition

See Udall's Apophthegms (1542, apud Murray): "chop-loguers or great pratlers." The word originated in Protestant derision of the 'tropological' and 'anagogical' senses of the scholastics; cf. Tindale on the four senses of Scripture (Obedience of a Christian Man, 304, 307, 308): "we must seek out some chopological sense."
