Representative English Comedies, v. 1. From the beginnings to Shakespeare

Note 451 — ROISTER DOISTER BY NICHOLAS UDALL

Reading edition

Note 'pastance,' indicating the original pronunciation in the rhyme, III. iii, 151; V. ii, 23; where the word is not required for the rhyme we find 'pastime,' V. v, 20, etc. So in Henry VIII's famous song, Pastime with good companye, we have the word rhyming with 'daliance,' 'daunce.'
