Note 26a — NOTES ON PARISHES ROUND HORNCASTLE.
Reading edition
According to Magna Britannia, it had an annual fair as well as a weekly market, on Tuesdays; although Leland (Itiner. Cur., vol. vii. 52), says “It hath once a year a fair, but hath no weekly market.” But surely the larger mart could imply the smaller, and Weir in his History of Lincolnshire (vol. ii. p. 407), mentions an attempt at New Bolingbroke, to “revive the market on Tuesday,” showing that there was one of old.
