A number of striking instances have been collected by Waitz, Anthropologie der Naturvölker, Bd. I., s. 141. Dr. Max Bartels, in the Zeitschrift für Ethnologie, 1888, s. 183, establishes this rule: “The higher the race, the less the tolerance of surgical disease; and in the same race, the lower the culture, the greater the tolerance.”
