Non-registered prostitutes, if arrested, are also liable to medical examination; the microscope is utilized in suspicious cases. The police procedure is described by Inspector Penzig (loc. cit.) as follows: “After the usual questions have been asked of the accused woman, the Inspector decides whether a medical examination shall take place. The woman assistant (social worker) also expresses her opinion on this point. If decided on, the examination is made by a woman physician. As a rule the women make no objection.”
