Suidas in explaining ἐξάρασθαι says τὸ ἐκτελέσαι τὰς ἀράς, τοῦτ’ ἔστι τὰς εὐχὰς ἃς ἐπὶ ταῖς ἱδρύσεσι τῶν ναῶν εἰώθασι ποιεῖσθαι. It is worth noting that in M.H.D. segen is not only as in modern German benedictio but also maledictio, see Osthoff, ‘Allerhand Zauber etymologisch beleuchtet,’ Bezzenberger, Beiträge XXIV. p. 180.
