Plut. Vit. Thes. XVIII. The account of Plutarch is substantially the same as that of his contemporary Pausanias the rhetorician; both appear to draw from some common source, which may be Krates’ περὶ θυσιῶν: see Mannhardt, Wald- und Feldkulte, p. 219.
