P. I. 31. 4. Attention was first drawn to this passage in connection with the ‘Anodos’ vase-paintings by Prof. Furtwängler, Jahrbuch d. Inst. 1891, pp. 117-124, but with his interpretation of the vases I find myself unable to agree (see p. 282, n. 2) and the evidence from the Philosophoumena seems to be unknown to him.
