Note 619 — Chapter XI · ANIMISM.

Reading edition

The term has been especially used to denote the doctrine of Stahl, the promulgator also of the phlogiston-theory. The Animism of Stahl is a revival and development in modern scientific shape of the classic theory identifying vital principle and soul. See his ‘Theoria Medica Vera,’ Halle, 1737; and the critical dissertation on his views, Lemoine, ‘Le Vitalisme et l’Animisme de Stahl,’ Paris, 1864.
