Note 4 — Chapter IX · LOCAL ANESTHESIA
Reading edition
Apothesine (Parke Davis & Co.) is a new synthetic preparation of definite chemical composition. It is ¹⁄₈ as toxic as cocaine, is very soluble in water and alcohol, and may be sterilized by boiling for five or ten minutes. It is used in a one per cent. solution and came into favor during the war, by reason of the scarcity of cocaine and novocaine. Apothesine is not a habit-forming drug and is therefore easily obtainable. At The First Institute of Podiatry this preparation and novocaine are almost exclusively used for producing local anesthesias.
