The first five years were, in his own words, rigorous. In 1650 he was removed from the Torre Velha to the Lisbon Castello, and thenceforth enjoyed greater liberty. He had been transferred from the Torre de Belem to the Torre Velha on the left bank of the Tagus in 1646.
