Note 419 — III The Sixteenth Century [1502-80] (continued 2)

Reading edition

The word is undoubtedly dotto in the facsimile of the text given in Antonio de Portugal de Faria, Torquato Tasso a Luiz de Camões (Leorne, 1898) although there, as always, it has been transcribed as colto. Diogo Bernardez calls Tasso culto, perhaps mistaking the reference in Garci Lasso, whose culto Taso is not Torquato but Bernardo. Lope de Vega called Camões divino and reserved docto for Corte Real.
