Note 79 — Chapter XXXI · KRATYLUS.

Reading edition

Stallbaum, Proleg. ad Kratyl. p. 18 — “quos Plato hoc libro acerbissimo sale perfricandos statuit.” Schleiermacher also tells us (Einleitung, pp. 17-21) that “Plato had much delight in heaping a full measure of ridicule upon his enemy Antisthenes; and that he at last became tired with the exuberance of his own philological jests”. Lassalle shows, with much force, that the persons ridiculed (even if we grant the derisory purpose to be established) cannot be Protagoras and the Protagoreans (Herakleitos, vol. ii. pp. 376-384).
