Note 27 — INTRODUCTION

G. (George) Horner translation

These three “rhapsodies” are to be found on pp. 206-216, 219-224, and 229-231. Scott-Moncrieff in his Paganism and Christianity in Egypt, pp. 77-80, points out that the early organisation of the Church in Egypt included “prophets” who were accustomed to utter things in ecstasy; and it is quite possible that these rhapsodies may be a specimen of their utterances. Besides being familiar with the Book of the Dead, they may have had an hereditary connection with the prophets of Amen.
