Note 316 — NAPOLEONIC RULE.
Reading edition
Tago, or tango, to touch or take, le Pelletier says; but it does not yield very good sense. Perhaps τάγμα, a regular body of soldiers, in Dion Cassius it stands for the Roman legion. Garencières reads here Tag à misère, “The tag to misery,” and says it is wretchedness to come from Portugal to France, Tag being the Tagus, on which Lisbon is situated. This might be interpreted well to mean the mischief arising to the empire from the successes of Wellington in the Peninsular war.
