Note 4 — Library of Canterbury.

Reading edition

The Prior of Christ Church Canterbury, and his Monks, sixty-four in number, were banished by King John, in 1207, on account of the opposition which they made to his nomination of an Archbishop. Their places were filled with Monks from the Monastery of St. Austin. After seven years’ banishment they were restored; £1000 was given them as a recompense for all detriment, and they received a charter of Restitution.
