Note 21 — Part I

Reading edition

"Truth is that kind of error without which a certain species of living being cannot exist" (W. P., Vol. II, p. 20). See also G. E., pp. 8, 9: "A belief might be false and yet life-preserving." See also W. P., Vol. II, pp. 36, 37: "We should not interpret this constraint in ourselves to imagine concepts, species, forms, purposes, and laws as if we were in a position to construct a real world; but as a constraint to adjust a world by means of which our existence is ensured: we thereby create a world which is determinable, simplified, comprehensible, etc., for us."
