Note 29 — Chapter I

Reading edition

Report in Margry, iv. 118, and Journal in Ibid., iv. 157. A third account of the Journal of the “Marin” says there were twenty-two in one biscayenne, twenty-three in the other; fifty-one men in all (Journal in Margry, iv. 242). The six men in excess in the total are probably to be accounted for as the force in the canoes. These discrepancies illustrate the confusion in the accounts.
