Prior to this time there had been such an occupation of some of these posts as to find recognition in the maps of the day. See map entitled “Amérique septentrionale, etc., par le Sr. D’Anville, 1746,” which gives a post at or near Erie, and one on the “Rivière aux Beuf” (French Creek).
